Economic impact
There are many articles on the economic impact of sepsis in different countries, yet precise healthcare related costs of sepsis are not available due to the differences in the definition of sepsis as well as the nature of sepsis.
A recent study published in 2020 by Buchman et al., revealed that the total health costs for hospital admissions and 90 days skilled nursing day care facility follow up totalled to USD 62 billion per year in the United States alone.
Another study published in 2022 by van der Berg et al., average health care costs in 26 countries were studied, based on existing publications with average hospital costs ranging from EUR 1.100 to EUR 92.000 per patient worldwide. In the US and Europe average hospital costs for sepsis patients varied between EUR 17.000 and EUR 92.000 which were varying largely based on the country and costs accounting methods applied. Average ICU costs were estimated between EUR 26.000 and EUR 40.000 based on studies in Canada, the UK and the US. A study performed by Koster-Brouwer et al., in 2015 estimated the average ICU costs for Sepsis in the Netherlands at EUR 30.000.
